Coming into today’s game with nearly identical records, it was bound to be an interesting but competitive game. Being just a friendly, the lineups were a little different.
For Bay FC, both first-choice wingbacks Caprice Dydasco and Alyssa Malonson were playing in the starting lineup.
LEADING SCORERS:
BAY FC:
Goals: Penelope Hocking – 4
Assists: Rachael Kundananji – 2
ANGEL CITY FC:
Goals: Riley Tiernan – 7
Assists: Gisele Thompson – 4
In her first game back since tearing her ACL in February 2024, Jun Endo opened up the scoring in the 27th minute.
For the second half of the game, head coach Albertin Montoya made a couple line-up changes. Two midfielders Jamie Shepherd and Catherine Paulson made their first appearances of the season.
The leading goal scorer for Bay FC, Penelope Hocking, tied the game 1-1. Maddie Moreau, who came in to play in the second half, registered the assist. “Maddie was a standout today, right? She comes in there and does everything we’ve asked her to do,” said Montoya.
Going into the final minutes of the game, neither team were able to capitalize on their scoring chances. Penelope Hocking nearly got her second of the night but was narrowly denied by the goalpost.
Something that was pointed out during the post-game presser was the atmosphere. Since Saturday’s game was a friendly, the staff wasn’t expecting such a big turnout: “I’m so grateful for our fans because it was hot today and it wasn’t a game that counted towards our season,” said Moreau. Montoya jokingly added to the conversation, “Note to self: Let’s bring our fans to intrasquad games.”
Bay FC will be back in action for another friendly Sunday July 27th against the Urawa Red Diamonds, who were defeated by the Seattle Reign this past Sunday.
The regular season will continue on August 2nd when the Houston Dash come into town to take on Bay FC at PayPal Park.
