Academica SC was looking to get momentum back on their side on Wednesday night, when they faced one of the most dangerous teams in the NorCal Division, San Juan SC.

Academica Starting XI: Lark, Sawyer, Sanders, Guiden, English, Figueroa, Sousa, Davis, Obermeyer, Dixon, Gregoris

San Juan Starting XI: Herndon, Farmer, Shackelford, Strickland, Swift, Sandoval, Humphreys, Bailey, Moness, Amick, McBride

San Juan started carrying all of the momentum, getting multiple shots in the opening minutes. Lindley Amick broke the deadlock in the 13th minute, giving San Juan a 1-0 lead when she found herself all alone in front of a wide-open goal. Moments later, Sophia Moness forced Morgan Lark to make a diving save on a free kick. Moness then scored against her former team in the 21st minute, making it 2-0.

Academica made some substitutions in the 26th minute, bringing on Kassandra Ceja and Abigail Souza to provide a spark before the game got out of hand. San Juan’s captain, Lena Bailey, made it 3-0 in the 33rd minute.

San Juan would maintain that lead into halftime. Academica made a single substitution, taking off Jocelyn Figueroa for Kayla Perez.

The second half got underway, before being delayed moments later due to a dog jumping on the field. Kyndra Obermeyer and Lisette Gregoris were doing their best to get Academica on the board, but to that point had been unsuccessful in doing so.

San Juan made wholesale changes, while Academica took off Jordan Sawyer for Genesis Maciel in the 59th minute. Academica made more changes in the 69th, when Blanca Negrete, Ainsley Wood, and Jayden Jimenez came in for Theresa English, Maya Dixon, and Gregoris.

In the 75th minute, Rhea Moore made it 4-0 for San Juan. San Juan then added two more goals in quick succession, an own goal, then Moore’s second of the night, to make it 6-0. Obermeyer nearly got Academica on the board in the 87th minute, but the play was called offside.

Academica will look to get back in the win column on Monday, when they travel to Pleasanton to take on the Rage.

Quote of the week

“To win the tournament, and to experience the NCAA tournament, that’s top of my bucket list right now. That would just be so exciting, so exhilarating. I cannot wait. It being at home, we all know it’s possible. We all know that we can do it. There’s no doubt in our minds that we’re going to come out in this tournament guns blazing and get after these games because we’re all confident that this tournament is ours.”
